6-8 Language Arts/Music PreK-8th – Debra Davenport

I am a lifelong parishioner of Annunciation of the Lord Parish and a 1984 graduate of St. Ann’s school. I have always valued my Catholic education and when I began public school in the 9th grade I often received comments from my peers expressing how they would have disliked going to such a small private school and wearing a uniform, to which I would reply, “It was great! I love Catholic school and wearing a uniform means you never have to worry about what you are going to wear!” I am close to many of my St. Ann’s schoolmates to this day, and it is a special bond.

I graduated from Austin High School in 1988 and then attended Jacksonville State University for one year with a partial drama scholarship, majoring in Language Arts, with the intention of being a drama teacher. I was very involved in theater in high school and love to perform, and perform with Community Theater when time permits. I attended Calhoun Community College my sophomore year.

I have six children which I home schooled for twelve years with the main purpose being to give them a Catholic education. I believe that parents are the primary educators of their children regardless of whether they choose to home school or enroll their children in public or private school.

I returned to college at age 40 to finish my degree in Secondary Education, with a B.A. in English Licensure and Certification from Athens State University. I graduated in May of 2014. I am certified to teach English to grades 6-12. I also will be teaching music for the first time this year. I have many years of experience in music, having played the piano for Mass since I was in 7th grade. I was in chorus and musicals every year of high school.

My philosophy of Catholic education is to put God first. “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matt. 6:33. I feel strongly that my primary role as an educator is to be a facilitator of spiritual and intellectual growth. I do not believe in a spoon-fed education. I am passionate about education and get excited about what I teach my students. I hope that my excitement will be contagious. As a fairly recent college graduate, I know what college is going to expect. As a mother of many, I know how to deal with children of all ages with patience, inspiration, understanding, and loving discipline. I want your children to learn self-discipline and to love learning! I want them to know that if they put God first and seek His will then they can accomplish anything, whether it be big or small.
